Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students of all ages and stages. Here are some of the kind words parents and students have shared about their experiences:
Camille W.
My daughter was fortunate to study piano with Dr. Low for eight years. He is a truly dedicated and inspiring teacher. Dr. Low holds high expectations for every student—not just in terms of technical skill but also in musicality, discipline, and personal growth. Lessons go far beyond playing notes accurately. Students are taught to pay attention to every aspect of their performance including how to communicate the depth and character of the music. Additionally, Dr. Low actively encourages participation in recitals, competitions, and exams. If you are seeking a teacher who combines rigor with encouragement and builds pianists who are confident, expressive, and musically literate, I strongly recommend Dr. Philip Low!

My daughter started lessons with Philip when a friend at Lutheran Summer Music camp recommended him. She improved greatly while studying with him. After she went to college, I started taking lessons as a beginning adult. I continue to take lessons after several years and have enjoyed my time with Philip as I get better.

Philip is a kind, intelligent, and experienced teacher who can bring out the best in students of all levels, from beginners to advanced. He is truly passionate about piano performance, and the fact that he has a PhD in it makes me feel extra fortunate to have found him to teach my daughter and son.

He cares so much about the instrument and making sure that kids love to learn the piano, even when it’s hard! He is so attentive to what students need and suits a wide variety of ages. The payoffs of working with him are evident, as many of his students win local and regional piano solo contests. Due in part to my studying with him, I was able to obtain a full-ride scholarship! You won’t regret studying with him—my mom and I make that 25-minute drive once a week and not once have we regretted it.

Our daughter had studied piano for almost 9 years before we found Dr. Low. She almost lost her interest to play piano and did not spend much time to practice at all and was thinking of quitting piano for good. By luck, we heard Dr. Low’s name from a friend and decided to give our daughter one last chance to keep learning piano. That decision changed everything. Now playing piano becomes our seventeen-year-old daughter’s favorite thing to do—she spends at least an hour every day to practice in her busy high school life. She has been improved a lot ever since she started with Dr. Low just over two years ago. I am very impressed with how she plays now. She is playing at level eight and preparing for her level eight theory exam. She just participated in her first Minnesota Music Teachers Association state Honors piano concert last month. Dr. Low is not only a talented musician, but also a patient and dedicated educator. He tailors his teaching style to fit our daughter’s learning pace and interests, which has really helped her stay engaged and motivated. Attending Dr. Low’s piano lesson becomes a highlight of the week. She always looks forward to it. I highly recommend Dr. Low to anyone looking for a skilled, reliable, dedicated, patient, and passionate piano teacher for their child.

Dr. Low is an exceptionally experienced piano teacher who brings both patience and skill to his instruction. He works effectively with children at various levels, adapting his teaching to meet each student’s needs. Our son has benefited greatly from his lessons with Dr. Low, showing remarkable progress not only in keyboard technique but also in his appreciation and understanding of diverse musical genres from different historical periods. Thanks to Dr. Low’s guidance, he has earned multiple awards and distinctions in piano exams and competitions. We wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Low to anyone seeking a dedicated and talented piano instructor.

I was a 70-year-old woman who hadn’t played piano in 55 years when I began taking lessons. Dr. Low has tailored lessons that build my skills using music that I truly enjoy. He utilizes teaching methods that provide the structure for me to experience my progress while playing at home. When I hit plateaus, he provides the encouragement that helps me navigate them. Dr. Low is extremely knowledgeable about the music he assigns, and he is flexible, positive, and funny. I know that he is an excellent teacher for adults because I and two other neighbors take lessons. And I believe that he is an excellent teacher for children because he gives us the emotional space and encouragement for us all to learn. I am playing Bach now and loving it!

Dr. Low communicates to the student not just what to do but how to do it. His pedagogical skills in building a student’s technique and musicality are highly effective. He maintains the highest of standards while giving clear measurable goals for the student, and his instruction is always given in a gentle manner. We couldn’t be happier with the results of his teaching!

When I was searching for a piano teacher in the area, Dr. Low’s profile truly stood out. It’s rare to find a piano teacher with a PhD, which speaks volumes about Dr. Low’s passion and professionalism in music. I wanted my children to begin their piano journey with the best teacher available. After carefully reviewing Dr. Low’s website, I decided to choose Dr. Low as their piano teacher. This decision has proven to be excellent, given how much my children have achieved in piano. Dr. Low is incredibly kind and patient with children while maintaining high standards. Each lesson is well-structured, filled with piano skills and musical theory. Dr. Low tailors lessons to each child’s level and uniqueness, helping them grow at their own pace. My children have been taking lessons with Dr. Low for over three years, and their piano skills have improved tremendously. As a performance-level piano teacher, Dr. Low sets a great example of what my children can achieve. The studio recitals are also very inspiring, showcasing the wonderful progress of Dr. Low’s students. As a parent, having Dr. Low as our piano teacher has not only improved my children’s piano skills but also taught them that with the right attitude and high standards, they can achieve great things.

Dr. Low is incredibly knowledgeable about how to make the piano sing. His techniques build on each other and are well thought-out and unique to his teaching. I’ve had two children take lessons with Dr. Low, and he was very sensitive to their learning styles and abilities, adapting to suit the needs of each. My younger daughter was shy to perform on her own, so Dr. Low played a duet with her at her recital. I was touched by how he watched her and let her lead the performance, adapting to meet her at her level. I have also taken lessons from Dr. Low as an adult, and he makes it fun for even adults to play. My children enjoyed his teaching methods, but also respected his musicality and learned a great deal from him. Dr. Low is a true professional, takes his responsibility for guiding students seriously, and is continuously adding to his repertoire of teaching tools. He has a growth mindset for both his students and himself. I have been 100% satisfied with Dr. Low and his teaching methods and the way it helped my children and me grow as musicians and pianists. He’s worth every penny!

My son has been studying with Dr. Low for almost two years now. Not only has his technique and musicality improved significantly, but also his confidence and love for music. It’s been wonderful to see how lessons are adapted to keep him both challenged and motivated week after week. What sets Dr. Low apart is his ability to balance technique with musical expression. He can always find the right way to explain or demonstrate something—whether it is a small detail in how the music should sound or a complex rhythm. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, Dr. Low offers the rare combination of skill, artistry, and personalized guidance that truly brings out the best in his students.

He is an exemplary teacher with a very kind and yet disciplined approach that makes a student thrive and not learn in fear, but to excel in their highest capacity. I have good reason to drive an hour one way each week for his class.

Dr. Low is truly fantastic! My son has been taking lessons from him for 16 months and he is flying through the books. His progress is remarkable and I love listening to him practice! My son can be a challenge to teach. He has an anxiety, ADHD, and an autism diagnosis, but he is high functioning. His interest in music has been such a fantastic outlet for him and he is soaring! Dr. Low embraces his unique abilities and caters each lesson to his needs. He’s understanding, patient, and all the things I would ask for in a teacher for him. Dr. Low allows his students to be involved in more than weekly lessons also if they desire. It’s optional, but my son has elected to participate in additional recitals and exams to earn rewards (ribbons, trophy, etc.). Dr. Low assists in setting these up without any additional pressure. Not only is Dr. Low a great teacher, but he is also very organized. He makes it easy on the parents. Each lesson Dr. Low prints out the pieces/skills for my son to practice and is very responsive to texts/emails. As a busy parent, Dr. Low is one person I feel I do not need to ever check up on. We feel truly lucky to have found him.

I really enjoyed taking lessons with Dr. Low. He is incredibly meticulous and dedicated, tailoring his lesson plans to each student. He has helped me improve my piano technique tremendously and enriched my understanding of musical history. During my preparation for competitions, Dr. Low was extremely supportive—offering extra lessons, tips, and overall encouragement throughout the entire process. I really appreciate my time with Dr. Low and the positive impact he has had on me.

Dr. Low is not only an exceptional piano teacher, he also helped my son develop skills such as discipline, dedication, and attention to detail that contributed to my son’s excellence in academics and self-confidence. I would highly recommend Dr. Low for his professionalism and very personalized teaching method that has proven results.

We have been with Dr. Low’s studio for 10+ years. He is a very patient and creative teacher and finds many ways to help the concepts he’s teaching to really stick. I have also appreciated how he really personalized the music choices based on my child’s preferences and interests. My child has developed a deep love of music, in large part based on the lessons with Dr. Low.

I have known Dr. Low for many years, beginning when he was a high school student in the choir I conducted. Now he is a mentor to me as a pianist and teacher. Dr. Low is very knowledgeable of all things related to teaching piano: repertoire, technique, student achievement, and communication. He is articulate, pleasant, and inspiring. His students do very well in competitions. It is my belief that any student who studies with him will be fortunate and will find a rewarding journey of discovery under his tutelage.

Our two children have taken lessons with Dr. Low for 3 years after starting piano with another teacher. We are thrilled to have found him! Dr. Low is patient and encouraging while teaching piano technique and musical concepts. He offers his students choice and is attuned to what methods work well for the individual student, all while gently pushing them with high expectations. It’s been a joy to watch our children grow as pianists with him.

Dr. Low is a phenomenal piano teacher. His experience, patience, and attention to detail have helped our son make tremendous strides in his piano playing over the last several years. Dr. Low sets very high standards for his students but also provides the tools and instruction necessary for them to meet those expectations. It is no coincidence that his students routinely excel in competitions and performances. I wholeheartedly recommend him and his curriculum for anyone serious about learning piano.

My son, Graham, has been taking piano lessons with Philip for the past 5 years and has shown tremendous growth under his instruction. Philip’s strong grasp on teaching piano technique has helped Graham soar to new heights with his performances. Under Philip’s guidance, Graham has competed in MMTA, earning a place in the Senior B honors concert as a 5th grader, winning 1st place at the Dennis Alexander Competition, as well as his latest achievement as the first-place winner of the 2022 Junior Young Artist Competition. We are grateful that Philip can teach Graham the technique and interpretation needed to succeed at a high level without the high intensity common among some piano teachers. Philip is a thoughtful, kind teacher who is able to demand excellence without being harsh. We are very appreciative of the positive impact he has had on Graham as a musician!
